In this apocalyptic thriller from award-winning writer and director Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot), Amanda (Academy Award winner Julia Roberts) and her husband Clay (Academy Award nominee Ethan Hawke), rent a luxurious home for the weekend with their kids, Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie). Their vacation is soon upended when two strangers -- G.H. (Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha'la) -- arrive in the night, bearing news of a mysterious cyberattack and seeking refuge in the house they claim is theirs. The two families reckon with a looming disaster that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world.

Als ik eerder had geweten dat Leave the World Behind een maatschappijkritische drama-thriller van de maker van Mr. Robot (tv) was, dan had ik geprobeerd vooraan te staan bij de wereldpremière op het AFI Fest in Los Angeles afgelopen oktober. Het gezin Sandford is een weekendje weg in een riant vakantiehuis als plotseling alle communicatienetwerken uitvallen. Enkele uren later staat een man (Mahershala Ali) voor de deur die beweert de eigenaar van het huis te zijn. Maar hoe verifieer je iemands identiteit zonder internet en telefonie? Regisseur en co-scenarist Sam Esmail, bedenker van hitserie Mr. Robot, creëert binnen de villa een unheimische microkosmos vol wantrouwen en egoïsme. Dat is overduidelijk een metafoor voor het huidige Amerika, maar wie optimaal wil genieten van deze uitmuntende psychologische thriller dient de film vooral niet té serieus te nemen. Getuige ook de ironische slotscène en de knallende oneliner waarmee Julia Roberts de film opent: ‘I fucking hate people.’
